October 27, 1941- November 6, 2023 William Edward Smith of Huron park passed away peacefully November 6th, 2023, at Huron Hospice Bender House. Father of Debra (Trent) Ward, Michael (Pauline) Smith and Joe (Darlene) Smith. Stepfather to Linda Barker, Kenneth (Sheila) Barker. Grandfather to Grant (Cathy)Ward, Patti Jo Locke, Trevor (Katie) Ward, Shaelyn (Jaymz) VanHerten, Lisa Hergott (Gary), Scott Smith, James Smith, Jessica Smith, Joshua Barker, Matthew Barker, Nicole Barker, Mac Barker, Lorie/Tim Stack, Gill/ Caitlin. Great Grandfather to Lily, Austin, Lynsey, Lacey, Kailyn, Sophia, Brianna, Darius, Cody, Alexis, Talan, Emmett, Oven, Maverick, Charlize, Colton, Blair, Lyla, Athena, Wyatt, Shikera, Steven, Hunter, and Gilbert. Predeceased by partner Shirley Barker (2021) and son-in-law AJ Barker (2020), Brother of Ruth Ann Partridge (Don), Jim Smith (Elaine). Remembered by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Bill started school up the 16th at Elma Public School, Listowel Secondary School in Listowel and attended teachers College in Stratford. Bill started his career in 1961 at the CIBC Bank in Midland, in 1964 Bill moved to Aylmer to work for Beaver Lumber. His passion for building would lead him to work in the Listowel and then Brunner where he managed Jayco Trailers and Maple Leaf Truck Caps. Finishing his career at Northlander in Exeter. He loved the on the road repairs he did for Northlander around Southwestern Ontario. In 1969 he moved to the family farm on the 16th just down the road from his parents and gave his kids the gift of a wonderful childhood of farm life with grandparents and happy memories. Bill’s favorite pastime was at the arena refereeing hockey or the Diamond Umpiring baseball. Bill loved watching his children and grandchildren love sports as much as he did. As with Bill’s wishes cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held Sunday November 26th from 1 PM to 4PM at Monkton Arena Community Centre. With words of remembrance and service at 2PM. Donations to Elma Minor Ball, or Central Perth Minor Hockey Association would be appreciated by the family. Cherished grandmother of Mia, Michael,(Charisse)Julianne(Jeremy)Travis(Caroline)Kelsey, Jackson, Quinn,Emily and Matthew. Great Grandmother to Ellanore, Thomas, Alora and Iris. Lillian was predeceased by her parents Frederick and Christina Pehlke, her siblings Esther (Henry) Knechtel, Frieda (Leo Mueller) Hilda (Ralston) Shore, Ruth (Murray) Hammond, Ella (Grant) Hastings, Laura (John) Anstette, Wilfred (Vera) Pehlke, Elsie (Ron) Alder, Lorine (Jack) Ryan, Harold Pehlke, and her son Brian (1957). Survived by her sister in law Joan Pehlke. She will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Lillian was a member of the Atwood Presbyterian Church and attended the bible study group at the church. She will be remembered for her love of gardening, knitting, sewing, home decorating and her talented piano playing.Friends and family will be received on Saturday November 11, 2023, at the Brenneman Funeral Home, 141 John St, Atwood Ontario. from 1 PM until the time of the service at 2 PM. October 4, 1935 - November 3, 2023 Passed away peacefully at Stratford General Hospital on Friday November 3, 2023 at the age of 88. Clayton is predeceased by his parents Russell and Hazel Shine, his brothers Kenneth and Dalton Shine and his sister Isabel Martin. He will be missed by his nieces, nephews, and cousins. Clayton lived in Monkton his whole life creating many connections in the Monkton and area community. He was a farmer and operated his own dump truck for many years. In his later years he would help drive many in his community who could not drive to doctors' appointments, grocery store or to visit family. Clayton was a real character to anyone who knew him and loved him. He was known for always having a story to tell. April 27, 1931- October 30, 2023 Don Dewar of Listowel passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday October 30, 2023 at the age of 92 after struggling with cancer. Don will be forever in the hearts of his loving wife Ruth (Daer) of 63 years, son Keith of Toronto, daughters Carol (Paul Davidson) of Cambridge and Karen Dewar-Birk (David Birk) of Ayr. Cherished grandfather of Zachary, Cameron, Katie (Luke) and Blake. He will be missed by his brother Ken (Gayle), Dean, Jenn, Luke, Christine, Kelli, Doug, Ben, Kristy, and sister-in-law Shirley Rolston Predeceased by his parents Roy and Theora Dewar, sister Mary Phyllis, brother in laws Gordon and Alvin (Janet) Daer, Harold Rolston and sister-in-law Marilyn (Brian) Wallace. Don was born on the farm now owned by his brother at RR#1 Monkton. Then, he moved to Atwood in 1960 and worked at Arbor Acres which was a local chick hatchery. After the hatchery closed, he was employed at Spinrite Yarns in Listowel for over 20 years. Don enjoyed fishing, camping at many provincial parks with family. The family wishes to thank all those who supported Don through his health journey. A special thanks to Dr. Edmonds, Care Partners, and the dedicated nurses and staff at Listowel Caressant Care Retirement Home. Thank you to Ernie Naylor for the words of comfort and prayers. Don was a member at Atwood Presbyterian Church. He was known for being a family historian, his stories of his past adventures, and his love for music. A private family service will take place. Feburary 28, 1937- July 26, 2023 Passed away peacefully with family by her side at Stratford Rotary Hospice on Wednesday July 26, 2023 at the age of 86. Aafke's greatest love was her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Beloved wife of the late Willem- Jan Portena (2019) whom she married in 1959. Loving mother of Mike (Theresa) Portena, Bettina (at peace 2018) (Henk) Schuurmans, and Rick (Ingrid) Portena. Special Beppe of Joanne (Brendan), Gina (Jordan), Ryan (Lindsay), Marco (Zoé), Jim (Kate), Tom, Eric (Romy), Lize (Andrew), Emily (Brodie), Carmen (Kiel), Kristen (Brett), René and Great-Beppe of Ellie, Leni, Hadlee, Presley, Sully, Arian, Evy, Lucas and Jacob. Fondly remembered by her extended family and friends in the Netherlands and Canada. Predeceased by her parents Nammen and Harmina Faber Relatives and friends will be invited to share their memories at Bethel Christian Reformed Church, 345 Elizabeth St. E, Listowel, on Sunday July 30 from 6 - 8 p.m. The funeral service to celebrate Aafke's life will be held at Bethel Christian Reformed Church on Monday July 31, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Cameron Oegema officiating. Beloved wife of Donald Colquhoun for 75 loving years. Loving mother of David (Andrea) Colquhoun, Kathryn (Isaias) Teves and the late Douglas Colquhoun. Cherished grandmother of Scott Colquhoun, Chrystal (Jon) Colquhoun- Bottoms, Meghan (Jason) Rea, Julia (Ben) Teves, Allision (Alex) Teves and Catriona (Noah) Teves. Great grandmother of Ayla and Malcolm. Predeceased by her brother John Wenzel. Marie is survived by her sisters in law Helen Wenzel, Jalna Colquhoun(the late Al) and Jean (Ivan) Fischer and many nieces and nephews. Marie was a faithful member of Trinity United Church in Listowel. Marie will be remembered for her time singing and playing piano at home for her own enjoyment, and singing in many church choirs, community operettas, and Kiwanis music festivals. Member for many years at the Listowel Golf club, serving as president for 1 year in the 1970’s. Marie was an avid Bridge player and was known for her gardening and pastries. Friends and family will be received on Wednesday April 12th, 2023, from 7 PM -8:30PM at Brenneman Funeral Home, 141 John St Atwood. Loving mother of her three daughters, Pauline (the late Earl) Steffler, Cheryl (Alan) Cleland and Lee-Ann (the late Brian) Tucker. Cherished grandmother of Chad Cleland, Shawn Cleland, Jason Cleland, Ashley Steffler- McIntyre, Jordan Tucker, Brody Tucker and her 10 great grandchildren. Predeceased by her parents David & Mattie Dewar, siblings Kay (Alvin) Shiell, Tom (Lorraine) Dewar, Brothers and sisters-in-law Edna Laurie, Olive Cummings, Nina Cummings, Jimmy (Eva) Buchanan, Myrta Darroch, Gladys Scott, and Barry Wagner. Survived by her 3 sisters Shirley (the late Glen) Buchanan, Marj (Paul) Krauter, Dorie (the late Ron Hartman) Wagner, brother-in-law Andy (the late Delores) Buchanan (Marion Behrnes). She will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Jessie was a member of Donegal United Church, Donegal UCW and the Donegal Women's Institute. Alex and Jessie owned and operated the service station in Donegal from the time they were married until his illness when they moved to Atwood. They both had a love for music and hosted many fiddle parties. Jessie was known for her love of baking and could plan a get together at a moment's notice. Despite her hearing impairment, Jessie was very social and loved to be around her friends and family. Friends and family are welcome for visitation at the Brenneman Funeral Home on Sunday July 30, 2023 from 4 PM - 8 PM. Funeral service will be held at Atwood Presbyterian Church at 11 AM on Monday July 31, 2023. Rev Brian Hymers will officiate. Burial will follow at the Donegal Cemetery. October 2, 1945 - June 19, 2023 Passed away peacefully at his home on Lavallee Lake on June 19, 2023, at the age of 77. Loving father of Che Cleland of Innisfil and Devin Cleland (Kim) of Osoyoos BC. Cherished grandfather of Damien, Megan, Kali and Adele. Survived by his sister Lorraine Cleland Renaud. Predeceased by his parents David Alexander Cleland, Hanna Cleland, and brother Blaine Cleland. Barry loved his time up north at the cottage & spending time with family and friends. Barry was an avid fisherman and hunter, he loved scuba diving, stock car racing and skiing, he was a man of many talents. Cremation has taken place. age 87, of Listowel, formerly of Atwood, passed peacefully with family by his side Saturday March 18, 2023 at Listowel Memorial Hospital. For nearly 66 years was the beloved husband of Bernice (Bell). Dear father of Brian (Debra) Cockwell, Bruce (Janet) Cockwell, and Donna (Rob) Jeske. Sadly missed by his grandchildren Nigel (Jessica), Jillian (Aaron), Alyssa (Evan), Kirstie (Greg), Taylor (Jordan), Josh (Jenna) and his great granddaughters Harper and Landry. Fondly remembered by brother Murray, and in-laws Leon, Bette, and Shirley. Predeceased by his parents Wilfred & Olive Cockwell, and in-laws Nellie and Gordon Bell. Predeceased by siblings Ruth, Ross, Percy, Mac, and Vivian. Neil, born and raised in Donegal, began his career at the Bank of Nova Scotia. After he and Bernice married, he moved to Ideal Supply where he opened the Kincardine branch. Neil’s insurance career began in 1974 and led him to start Cockwell Insurance Brokers in Atwood, operating at the original location for 40 years. Neil, deeply committed to his community of Atwood, was a lifetime member of the Atwood Lions Club, original member of the Atwood Fire Department, served on the Donegal Cemetery Board, Chamber of Commerce, and Pine River Boat Club. Neil also operated as a full time spare at the Atwood Men’s Club always subbing in when necessary. Neil could be found tinkering in his shop, woodworking, repairing/restoring engines, or fishing, relaxing and socializing at his Lake Huron cottage. Neil’s greatest joy was his family, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren along with assorted pets. A private family service will be held. A public celebration of life will take place on Saturday June 3, 2023, 1:30-3:30 at the Atwood Community Centre .
